That’s an example of a backronym, meaning somebody came up with that acronym long after the word “tips” had been around for gratuity, but the version I’ve heard most is “To Insure Prompt Service” and yes, it should be “ensure” and not “insure”, but hey, that doesn’t fit the acronym that somebody was trying to create.

Your question implies that that the word “tip” or “tips” is an acronym. It is not.

The word “tip” simply means a “reward or gratuity” for service or services rendered.

The belief that tip or tips is an acronym, is just another commonly held fallacy, of the kind so beloved by Americans, who, having no original language of their own, try to invent acronyms for everything.

I’d say the missing word is probably INSURE.

The more suitable word would be ENSURE but it doesn’t start with the letter “i”.

insure – to guarantee against loss or harm.

ensure – to secure or guarantee, to make sure or certain.
