Proper Grammar…. feeling bad or badly?

Which is correct? I have a cold: I am feeling bad or I am feeling badly?

He had a tamper tantraum. He acted badly or he acted bad.

I have been told two conflicting opinions. Thank you.

As badly is an adjective, using it will describe the sense of feeling. If you are feeling badly, you’re going numb. If you’re feeling bad, then you are sad. Get the difference? He acted badly means that he’s not much of an actor. He acted bad means that he is misbehaving.

I think it depends who and what you are talking about….for yourself I would use: I feel bad today and I’m sorry that I acted so badly. For someone else I would use: He felt badly today and He is being bad. I know that’s not much help, sorry.

“badly” is an adverb, not an adjective, mark.

An adverb would describe the verb, but you are describing the subject “I” and “he”, so you would use the adjective, “bad”. It is a predicate adjective.

would you feel ‘badly’ if you had a cold, or would you feel “poorly” ?

either way, I’d go with the “ly” ending ones .
