Internet Slang- helpful or annoying?
What do you think of chat speak or internet slang? I’m 13, and I don’t like it when people use it online, especially when the whole message is crammed with them, as if they don’t use them enough. People are more likely to take you seriously when you use real words and spell properly. And being kind of young here (or anywhere online) I don’t want people thinking I’m not as smart as I really am…
But generally, I think chat speak is ok, but only using a few, like “lol” which is reasonable enough. But I think people should spell out the words instead of using “2”, “r”, “u” and such. What do you think?

I agree with you completely. I find it annoying too. I feel it is a kind of laziness, but that is only my opinion. It makes me wonder if people are on their way to forgetting the refined, nuanced ways of writing which assume that the reader has a certain level of intelligence.
My sister, a vice provost in a large university, says ruefully that she gets a lot of applications and enquiries with such slang from prospective students, and feels they sound very rude. As she often has to forward these mails to concerned departments, she first corrects them so that the receiver has no trouble reading them and does not get a bad impression which may affect the evaluation of the student!

For someone new to all this, as I am, the slang is a pain in the butt. I have a hard enough time understanding the stuff I see, the slang only makes it worse.

I think you are right, there are a lot of crude people in the internet world, slang is ok, because in the internet, nothing happens, its all in real life that counts that makes the person in trouble

In your case it would be annoying however in other people’s cases it can be very helpful at times say maybe if your in a rush to skip back and forth between im’s or perhaps if you do not know how to spell a word. Look past the words and become idealistic with it and maybe you might understand more.
