As used in the sentence, there is no meaning that makes sense. The sentence is incorrect. The fingers of a hand may be stubbed as a family trait (short, fat fingers), but work will not stub them, other than by injury. The palm of a hand is not characterized as stubby and cannot be made “stubby” by work.

Don’t be fooled into assuming the sentence is correct. It is not. Ask whoever proposed the sentence to show it is correct.

Stubbed: 1. like a stub; short; stubby; 2. covered with stubs or stumps.

In the context of the sentence presented, his fingers were thick, muscular and stubby, rather than sleek and slender.

stubbed meaning became stubby, certainly there is a better choice of words to describe same, but all you have to do is look at the hands of an older person who has been a construction laborer all their lives to know exactly what it means.

I consider myself an accomplished web researcher and I was also unable to find an adequate definition per se, although able to easily picture “stubbed hands” in my mind.

One descriptive phrase I found was “His broad hands terminated in stubby fingers attached to calloused palms, and his muscled forearms were like a real-life Popeye.” If you find yourself defending your research skills and effort, you may use it if you wish.

A question: Did your list maker “Websterize” the word? Is Websterize a word?

Use “websterize” in a sentence: I think my aunt websterized the word “websterize”.

Definition: v. Made it up.

Two possibilities are:

1. reduced to or resembling a stub; short and thick; stumpy.

2. abounding in or rough with stubs. (something having a short, blunt shape, or showing signs of being knocked often)

I would say its a metapohor to describe that he worked so hard that his hands were used up almost.

“To strike (one’s toe or foot) against something accidentally.”

Maybe they’re saying his hands were blistered or weathered from a life he didn’t necessarily want to lead. Hands could be a metaphor for something else.
