How does one become a crossword writer?
I love crosswords, and I have recently starting trying to craft my own. I doubt they are really good enough to be published yet anyway, but I’m improving, and I’d like to know how to go about submitting them for publication. Where would be some good places to start? Probably not the New York Times, right? What do I need to include? What should I mention in the cover letter? It would be so cool if a crossword I designed were to be published, and I’d like to at least know that I got the protocol right. Anybody out there done this successfully? Also, should I get one of those computer programs, or just keep doing it on a grid in pencil? What do the cruciverbalists out there prefer?

Most newspapers use syndicates for their puzzles. Puzzle magazine publishers (Kappa, Penny Press) may have the lowest bar for publication (I know them personally, I can say that), but are very good at working with new constructors. But ya gotta go to ww.cruciverb.com and at least look at Basic Rules and Sage Advice and talk to people there.
The two links tell you different publishers, what they look for, and what they pay.
