Grammar question…?

I’m writing an essay and I wrote the word ‘schoolers’, but Microsoft Word says that it isn’t spelled right. Is ‘schoolers’ proper grammar, is there another way to spell it?

Thanks!

MS Word is notoriously unreliable when it comes to spelling and grammar checks.

While “schoolers” as in “high schoolers” or “middle schoolers” is technically correct (based on results from dictionary.com), it’s very informal. Avoid it for formal writing. For instance, if you’re writing an assignment for class, I would change it to “high school students” or whatever is appropriate.

However, if you were writing dialogue, and one of your characters speaks informally, then it would be OK to have that character use the word.

If you are trying to say “high-schoolers” or something like that, it might sound better if you said “high school students” instead. The first way might not be proper grammar.

I don’t know what your sentence is but instead of “schoolers” say something like “grade school students”. It is better grammar.

Pre-schoolers, e.g., sounds perfectly fine to me. Better than pre-scholars anyway. You want to use it, Honey, just ignore the spellcheck and go right ahead.
