CC and BCC pertaining to Emails?

On the Internet, in addition to “TO” field for writing the email address of the person to whom you wish to write the mail, the fields of CC and BCC are also provided. These are for sending the Carbon Copy and the Blind Carbon Copy of the same mail to other receipients.

The phrase CC means Carbon Copy and BCC means Blind Carbon Copy. CC was commonly used when carbon papers were inserted between papers to create copies of letters and other documents while writing them by hand or on typewriter. In case of writing an email, no one is using carbon papers to create copies of the mail. So apparently, the phrases CC and BCC are a misnomer in the context of emails. In my view, instead of CC and BCC, only the words Copy and Blind Copy should be used.

I do not have any question here but wish to get opinions and comments about my thoughts from everyone.

I agree that putting “Copy” and “Blind Copy” makes a lot more sense than having the word “carbon” in it. However, most of the personnel at least in the company for whom I work already use those phrases when speaking to each other. For example, one would ask, “Would you please copy Bob on that email?” I think that it would be an idea to consider for future email software upgrades, but I don’t think that the technicality is worth the expense of a “patch” for current versions.

Also, I agree that the heading should read “Copy:” and “Blind Copy:” rather than the acronyms. There is already an established and well-known meaning for “BC.” It’s already been claimed.

The idea is already in use verbally, but can be put to use in future email software versions.

Take care!

BCC = Blind Carbon Copy CC = Carbon Copy A BCC does not contain the list of all the people getting this, a CC does. The carbon part referrers to a sheet that would be put between two sheets of paper on an old fashioned typewriter too make two or more copies while you typed only once. This was known as a carbon sheet for reasons you probably don’t want to know but if you do just ask. Now where was I? OH yea looking for my slide rule.

That’s a very good point have never thought about that before. I agree with you only Copy and Blind Copy should be used. Maybe they were put it when email was invented because there terms that were easily recognisable at the time to users

Email is an electronic form of what is now referred to as snail-mail and that’s why the terms are used. As long as you know how to use them properly, what’s the big difference?

Does it really matter what they are called as long as you know what they are for?
