Can you help me? What does this mean?

Old wives’ Tale. It’s a Vocab word for my Summer Reading list. It’s not in the dictionary. If you could let me know, that would be great!

It’s like a myth, folklore, or a fairytale. It’s something that’s probably not true, but has been passed down by word of mouth for quite awhile. The reason for the name is basically because it would be something old women would talk about. So used in context, if someone said that you should cut your hair after a lunar eclipse only if you want it to grow fast, his friend could dismiss it by saying “that’s just an old wives’ tale.”

Wives tales are folklore that has come down thru the years. Like, when the cows lay down, that means it’s going to rain. Or if you drop silverware, that means company is coming. Those would be examples of old wives tales.

An old wive’s tale is sort of like an urban legend, or folklore. It is a myth known by many, thought to be true.
