Icebox -0: Never Again

You won’t believe what happened. What can I do?

In my English class for my first year in college, I made a bad quiz grade at first because I couldn’t afford the books yet. When I got an essay assignment of one of three topics, I chose the one I could do because it had to do with all I had to read (as obtained from this site, see this link http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=An_wX_UjPY_IyYC9lMe3fDfty6IX;_ylv=3?qid=20070830071556AAATC2T). Unfortunately, whenever I would try to write the essay, my mind was a blank and instead of turning in something that would’ve been half-assed, I turned in nothing. This hurt my grade but I figured I could bring it up today with the quiz that I studied for because I finally got the book yesterday.

The quiz wasn’t on paper lie it usually is supposed to be, so the teacher wrote the questions on the board. During this, as hard as I tried to stay awake, I fell asleep and hoped in my mind that I would wake up to do the quiz.

You’re off to a bad start, but it’s your responsibility to do the reading and be awake for quizzes. The professor has no obligation to coddle you by giving you a second opportunity to prove your mastery of the material when you slept through the first chance.

It’s a mean old world once you’re out of high school. Professors don’t always give a damn about your self-esteem or the unfairness of it all. Do *not* ask the professor for any special consideration on the quiz (or anything else).

It’s only September. There’s a lot of time yet to do your very best work in this class and still get a good grade. Vow that you will not screw up in this class again. If you are even slightly lost, see the professor during office hours. You might be surprised how willing to help they are when you can be bothered to ask for it.

I hate to say this but it sounds like you are playing the victim. You need to be responsible for your own life. If your dad is paying a lot for your education, I am sure he would have spent additional funds to ensure that you also had the books necessary to fufill your class requirements. Or that would have been the time to talk with your professor hoping that maybe she would have an extra book on hand or help you get in touch with a student to share with. On the essay, turning in nothing is always worse than turning in something. At least it shows an effort. Falling asleep during a class, especially during a quiz speaks for itself. At this rate, you probably won’t have to worry long because although your parents obviously love you, it is a waste of money to give you an opportunity you apparently CHOOSE to throw aside.

Look, I understand that you don’t like the disability label, and I’m not a psychiatrist by any means, but from your inability to concentrate and the fact that a simple change in testing format completely threw you, it sounds to me like there’s more going on here than just “bad decisions.” Go talk to academic advising. Even if you really don’t want to find out whether you’re eligible for a 504 plan (or whatever they use in college), they can help set you up with tutors and other study resources so you don’t keep having these problems.

First speak with your teacher and see how likely it is that you can make an A at the end of the semester, they will be able to give you statistics about what you need to do to achieve this. It may be that you will just have to take a withdrawl and do this class next semester, which is very common and since your having such an intersting time with this class you may need to do this. Your a freshman, make sure you haven’t overwhelmed your schedule and have 2 hours of homework time available for EACH class (you may not need this, but come finals you will). theres no shame in saving a grade that maters by withdrawing and doing it later.
