There are lots of reasons, some of which are dependent on your area of study. For example, in the sciences it is critical to wear clothes and accessories (hair restraints) that facilitate safety in the laboratory. Open-toed shoes, for example, are extremely hazardous in the lab. Similarly, professional students (medical, veterinary, dental, etc.) are expected to begin to dress as professionals. Quite simply, if you don’t look the part, you won’t be perceived by others as authority figures on these sorts of issues.

I agree wholeheartedly with the earlier post, that dress in college is a sign of respect (or disrespect) for your professors, the institution, and your classmates. Would you show-up to a court room in pajamas or shorts and a t-shirt? Of course not, because you have an obvious, vested interest in being perceived as an adult with a legitimate claim in the court room. The same is true of the classroom.

Proper dressing is just a mean of showing respect , & also maybe not to cause any distraction/commotion to the peers.
