Will I Get Accepted Into Medical School?

I am going into my 3rd year of Undergraduate education at a very strong Jesuit college in New York State which is known for its ability to get its students into Med School. I currently have a 3.55 GPA as a biology major, am a Div. I athlete, T.A. a lab, traveled to S. Africa to work in clinics and hospitals, have done countless hours of volunteer work and shadwoing and have been awarded several honors for volunteer work done and ability to suceed both athletically and academically. All I ever here about is how impossible it is to get into Medical School. Realistically, will I get into Medical School???

Don’t you hate a “Depends” answer?

Your overall GPA is low for medical school applicants. A 3.7 is borderline; however, if your GPA in the prereqs is higher, then you may get in considering all of your other assets. But if it’s the prereqs bringing your GPA down, then I think the odds are against you being accepted.

I believe I know the school you are attending and a GPA of 3.5 is doing good there. I would ask your academic advisor about the school’s policy regarding repeating course work to elevate grades. Depending on the response, you may want to delay applying to med school until you have elevated your GPA or minimize your extracurricular activitiers to focus on your remaining coursework to try to bring up your GPA. You certainly have enough activities to impress the admissions committee.

Nobody ever knows what decisions an admissions committee will make. Assuming a worse case scenario that nothing improves scholastically for you, I would still recommend that you apply to at least 12 medical schools. Your undergrad school carries an excellent reputation and that might sway some people sitting on a committee–you just never know. If you do not get accepted, I think you would make an outstanding candidate at some of the top tier foreign medical schools and certainly you would be accepted at some of the better Caribbean medical schools.

You are a strong candidate–you just need to rectify whatever is bringing your GPA down. I wish you luck! I suspect your friends will be calling you Doctor someday.

I would suggest if you have the money to go even further than 12, even 25-35 medical schools (both MD and DO, of course). It may sound excessive, but what is an extra 2 grand when medical school costs 40K a year? I think anything under 20 is a gamble, and in retrospect that extra 2 grand could mean the difference between an acceptance and reapplying.

Also, what is your BCPM and Overall GPA? I would say that if you can get above a 30 on the MCAT, your chances of getting into a Med School is very solid.

You have done quite a bit in extracirricular work and performed well in school, however your MCAT scores will make or break you in some way.

Make sure to give plenty of time to study for the MCAT – usually 18 months of a course of study and a lighter (12 credit) on your 6th semester would make for easier times doing well on the MCAT. The MCAT is one of the only ways to judge all candidates from all school throughout the country.

Sounds that you got the extracurriculars going for you. Your GPA is just average so that is fine.

The MCAT score is going to be the big one. So take it seriously.

I am finishing up on a book about getting into medical school. If you are interested please visit http://www.pre-med(dot).info

take out the “(dot)” and put in the period and then “info” afterwards.
