I am wondering if anyone has ever applied for a life science research conference and been placed on a waiting list. Is the waiting list basically a denial?

I’ve never had a paper rejected, even when I hadn’t actually done the research yet – and it sounds like a rejection to me. Maybe it wasn’t a suitable topic? Was it something obscure?
