G’day,

From all the countries you mentioned, India is most likely have the lowest cost of living, and probably the lowest tuition fee as well due to currency exchange.

For Australia, on top of tuition fees, you will need to pay for campus fee (vary from each uni) and Overseas Student Health Cover (abt AUD$350/yr) and text books (abt AUD$200). These are the rough estimate of the fees for your study.

Before coming to Australia, you will need to pay the fee for student visa processing and health check-up. Depending on your country of origin, you may also be required to take an IELTS test for indication of your English proficiency for application to uni and for visa (www.ielts.org).

Some may argue that the universities belong to The Group of 8 (www.go8.edu.au) are the ‘famous’ one. However they group was formed just to unify the promotional effort. The members cannot claim that they are the best at everything that they offers.

There are only 42 (soon to be 43) universities in Australia, all of them are fully accredited and they are tightly controlled, therefore the quality and recognition of their graduates are equal from wherever university you are studying from. The most important thing is you have to READ the course information carefully, since some courses may have the same name but different content. Finance and accounting courses are offered by all universities in Australia and usually indicated under Bachelor of Business/Commerce degree programs.

To find out the latest info abt course that you are taking and where it is offered, I suggest you to go to the Dept. of Education, Science and Training website (http://cricos.dest.gov.au) or IDP Education Australia (www.idp.edu.au). It will give the list of institutions that are able to offer courses to international students who wants to continue their study in Australia. The info abt fees and requirements are available from the universities’ websites. Please make sure that the information you are accessing are the one for International Students.

Hope this helps. E-mail me at mikegun(at)studentfirst.com.au if you have further questions abt study in Australia. Good luck for your study 🙂

The best finance universities are all located in the US.

In my opinion, they are:

1. University of Chicago

1. Massachusetts Institute of Technology

3. Stanford University

4. The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania

5. The University of California at Berkeley

6. UCLA

Other schools that could claim a place in or near the top ten are (in no particular order):

Duke University, Carnegie Mellon University, University of Rochester, NYU, Columbia.

Schools with excellent finance programs that I put a little below these are: Harvard University, Yale University, Northwestern University, Washington University (St Louis), University of Maryland, University of Texas and University of Michigan.

All of the above programs are where I would rank PhD programs in Finance through a business school. Dartmouth (the Tuck School) has an excellent finance faculty, but only offers the MBA.

If you expand the list to include doing a field in Finance through a, Economics department, then I would also include:

MIT, Chicago, Harvard, Yale, UC-Berkeley, UCLA, Duke, Princeton, Yale, University of Minnesota, University of Michigan. In particular, I would rank Harvard’s economics program very high compared to its finance program.

For Finance in the UK, the best school is London Business School. For doing finance through an Economics department, the best are LSE, Cambridge and Oxford.

In Canada, the best for Finance are University of Toronto and University of British Columbia.

I’m sure that there are good schools in India. But no Indian schools make the list of top 100 MBA programs (while US schools take up 18 of the top 20 spots). Therefore, I doubt that any Indian school is a good in finance as any that I listed above.

As for accounting — there is a big overlap between those that are good in accounting and those that are good in finance. NYU, Wharton and Berkeley are among the best accounting programs.
