Studying your MBA via correspondence (which in modern times, is on line), is a perfectly good venue for getting your education. The books you use in an online MBA are the same ones you would use in a bricks and mortar classroom. There may even be an advantage in terms of your professors, because the lack of geographical constraints in an online school allows the university to contract professors from universities all over the country to teach your courses (yes… even Ivy League schools like Harvard or Yale).

There are some things you need to understand and consider when deciding upon an MBA in an online school:

1. It’s not easier, and may be even harder. Since you won’t have in-person lectures, plan on reading your entire text book from cover-to-cover. Be prepared to ask questions about topics you don’t understand via email or phone well in advance so your professor has time to respond to you BEFORE your assignment deadlines.

2. There are different “types” of learners. Some learners have a greater aptitude of absorbing information audibly, or experientially. If you are this type of learner, you may find that an online degree isn’t the best option for you, although it may be fine for others.

3. Online degrees are good venues for advancing a career that you already have in an organization that you’re already working in, but they tend to fall short in the area of facilitating your career and providing recruiting opportunities into companies. To the contrary, bricks-and-mortar universities’ MBA graduates usually have an opportunity to meet with corporate recruiters, interview, and have jobs lines up for them before they graduate. This is really the only weakness I’ve found thus far with an online degree.

4. You need to be ABSOLUTELY CERTAIN that the school you’re enrolled in, AND the PROGRAM you’re enrolled in is accredited by the appropriate agency so that your degree will be recognized by employers. Otherwise, you could waste a lot of time and money on something that won’t help you at all. (It could even be considered a fraud)

5. Make sure you have name recognition. Many bricks and mortar schools are starting to offer degrees online. These are great options that weren’t available to me when I got my MBA. If you’re doing a purely virtual university… Make sure it’s from a recognized venue: Walden University, University of Phoenix Online, American Intercontinental University, etc. You can also rest assured that everyone knows these universities are accredited.

6. Since you can get concentrations in your MBA, you need to pick a school that offers the concentration that will best fit your chosen career path. I had a dual concentration of finance and international business. Maybe you want to do your concentration in suppy chain, or information systems. Does your university offer the concentration you need?
