What is better is what works better for you. If you’re an independent worker and can self-schedule so that you can complete assignments without a teacher daily having to keep you on track, then you’re a candidate for an online degree program. If you have to have someone else to monitor and motivate you, you’re not. If you have the time to attend classes which are scheduled at the convenience of the university, then by all means, do so. If you want or need to schedule your own class time at your convenience, an online program will meet your needs.

I think the feedback you’ve gotten here is outdated. I think it is also based on prejudicial feelings rather than facts.

Yes, there are some online schools that aren’t accredited, but there are some traditional schools that aren’t accredited, too. However, most online schools or programs are fully accredited, the course credits are transferable to any college, and their degrees are as highly respected as those of any other college. Almost ALL colleges now have some type of online courses or degrees, and the course offerings are increasing. Graduates with online degrees get the same jobs with the same salaries as students from traditional universities. I am currently working on my Masters online, and my manager has told me it makes no difference to her or anyone in our organization whether a degree comes from an online or traditional school. I have heard other students say that their employers consider students with an online degree more motivated and more likely to be able to work independently than students from traditional schools. They see it as a plus.

Online schools do not allow you to be isolated. Many of your assignments are focused around online discussions and debates. I have taken a number of courses that require you to work as a team to complete class projects, communicating by e-mail, through the class discussion board, or through the chat board. From my experience, you get more in-class interaction with other students online than in a traditional classroom where the teacher does all the lecturing and the students sit on their hands and don’t have a chance to interact. Outside the classroom is another story. If you need friends, online education is not the answer, but if you need like-minded individuals with which to discuss pertinent issues and learn alongside, it will serve you well.
