Which is better for a Master’s degree, a state or a private college?

My boyfriend is looking at St. John Fisher College (a private college in Rochester, NY) and Central Connecticut State University (a state college in CT). Does anybody know much about these schools or if one would be better than the other? He plans on getting a future Doctorate at an Ivy League school like Yale, so would a degree from St. John Fisher look better on an application? He’s also thinking of teaching English in Japan for a year with the JET program if that would look best on an application. Any help would be much appreciated.

Well, usually, and I do mean usually, private schools are seen as ‘better’ in a sense because they’re more exlusive. Therefore, one can say that it’s ‘harder’ to get into one, etc. Whether that’s true and whether the admissions officer thinks that way can be argued. I don’t know anything particularly about the two schools, but the one with the better program in the field would be the best choice, as what you do in the program is much more important than the actual program. So if the state school has the best program in the area, then that would be the choice.

The best way I’ve noticed to get information about a particular university is to try and talk to students there. They’ll give you all the info on the program status, etc. Good luck!
