Where should I go to college?

I’ve got a high ACT score and an almost perfect GPA and I want to major in engineering (most likely earn a PhD). MIT appears to be the best in the world, but it is very expensive. My family’s expected contribution (EFC) almost covers the tution and fees but my parents aren’t willing to pay the sticker price. University of Michigan and the honors track at Purdue seem to have good programs and both are relatively close to home, but I don’t want to miss out on a great education. Is MIT – or some other great school – worth going way into debt for? I am also considering going to Olin. Tution there is free, but does it compare to MIT?

MIT would look good on your resume. U of M or Purdue are ok too. Have you checked Case? It is close to you and has good reputation, also has lots of scholarship students.

You may consider going to MIT for graduate school. That way you would have the prestige, and also a more well rounded education.

It’s a tough decision, but I’m sure you’ll do fine whatever track you decide to take. Best of luck to you.

From what I hear Purdue is a great school. But, if you have your heart set on MIT how about applying for some scholarships or taking out a student loan.

No, Olin doesn’t even come close. Being in the honors division at U Mich or Purdue is acceptable, but can barely compare to MIT. So yes, it’s worth being in debt to go to a great school. And have you looked at scholarships at all?

I’m hoping for Purdue for graduate school. I’m kind of the same thing MIT is way too expensive and living expenses are bad out there too. Texas Tech is supposed to be good too. I’m a software person though.
