Don’t buy books until after you meet with the professor for the first time. Decide is you are going to stay in that profs section of the class or if they are so irritating that you are going to go to drop/add. Find out if the professor really uses the book or if its what the other profs in the department use so he posted it. Also look into cheaper ways of getting the text (used from school, online, borrow from the library). If the class is in your major, you will probably want the book for future reference, but there is rarely a need to purchase books before a class starts.

A few weeks before classes start, if possible. You will have a better chance of getting cheaper, used books, and stores won’t run out of books you need.

Try looking online for your textbooks (places like ebay, amazon, etc), email your teachers to ask what textbooks they are, and so on. Also look up bookstores in your area. Besides your college bookstore, there may be other bookstores nearby that can sell you textbooks for cheaper prices.

as soon as you know your classes specially if your going to get them used from the college book store.

that would also help you read first chapters so you can stay on top of things

As soon as you can get your hands on the used ones that are allowed, otherwise you will be paying out the booootay for them. Even used books are a fortune.
