You should have at least two years of work experience before you start thinking about the idea seriously. Beyond that, it depends on you and your career path. It may be that you want to reach the upper levels at a top corporation, in which case you will want to worry about rankings. You may wind up in a job you like that will pay for a part-time program at a local school, and that may be what works best for you. Student loans can only cripple you if you take on more debt per year than you expect to earn in salary when you’re done.

The best and ideal time is after at least 4 years of real work experience and some team leadership experience. You should have managed and did performance reviews of at least one person. B-schools want people who are leaders and have leadership experience. There’s no one to lead when you go to B-school.
The top 20 B-schools should be your goal. Anything below that is not worth the value, in comparison to the salary lost from going to school and the tuition and debt ratio,
