What Type of Degree is Needed for Marital Counseling/Therapy?
Favorite Answer
Not all states allow masters-level psychology graduates to work as fully independent therapists, however, so you’ll have to check with your local guidelines before pursuing this career. If this is the case, social work with an emphasis on family practice is definitely preferable. Or, you could go for the PhD or PsyD in psychology (clinical or counseling) but this takes a lot more time and energy and may not be worth it if you’re only interested in being a therapist and not a researcher.
Good luck. Contacting the psychology or counseling department at your local university might also be helpful.
After 5 years of work under supervsion you can apply for a private practise license.
Otherwise you go for a PH D in Clinical Psychology. After you pass the orals board and pass the state license exam you can practise without supervision.
