Awful GPA for college?

I am a senior and I just found out my GPA is 2.98. My SAT is around 2000, but the GPA is just awful. I have good writing skills, and can do pretty well on the essay, but i feel that the GPA will just bring everything down. I will bring it above 3.00 in the next quarter, i have no doubt in that, but still. I was hoping to try for some good colleges, maybe even an ivy (though didnt have too much hope). Do I have any chance at all?

Consider a community College. At least complete 24 units at a CC

You can pull your GPA up there then transfer with some prerequisites.

It will be more economical for your family

Ivy schools are out of the question with that GPA, even if you get at 3.0. But other schools will accept you, as long as you look at the school’s statistics on their average student and fall within those categories.

I don’t know what you consider a “good” school, but you should be able to find a lot of schools that will accept you. Unfortunately, they won’t be “top 10” or anything like that.

You do NOT have to go to a community college! A 3.0, 2000 SAT and good AP scores can get you into a regular university.

You don’t need to go to a community college! There are lots of places you could get in…LOTS. I’m sorry to say your chances of an Ivy are basically 0 (although you could transfer), and it’s probably a little higher but unlikely with the “little Ivies” (ie. Amherst, Williams)

Actually I was in the same place as you–around a 2.9 GPA but with great writing skills–and I got into one of the top 25 colleges in the country. There is hope, I promise! Be sure to play up your talents, ESPECIALLY writing (a lot of colleges want good writers)

I don’t know exactly what kind of place you want to look at, but here are some ideas off the top of my head–sorry most of them are on the East Coast; I don’t know about anything really on the West Coast: (bigger schools:) U Michigan, U Colorado Boulder, Boston University, UConn, Syracuse, UMASS Amherst…(smaller schools:) Dickinson, Denison, Hobart & William Smith, Ithaca, Kenyon (if you are VERY talented with writing…a bit of a reach though), American U, Babson, Eckerd, Emerson.

GOOD LUCK!

Yeah because the new SATS are out of 2400 right? Yeah I got a 2120 or about a 1410 witha 4.2 and I didnt get into Yale so I dont know about an ivy league but you can still get into a great school go there for a year or two and then transfer to an ivy league. But as I said with good SATS and writing skills and a GPA around a 3.0 you can still get into lets say possibly UCLA or other school of that caliber. Good Luck

my highschool GPA was around 2.90 – finished just below top 1/3 of class, only made Honor Roll once junior year, every qtr senior yr – got accepted to Penn State, finished in BOTTOM 20% with a 2.59 GPA/2.79 in major, got some C’s and some D’s, graduated in 4 yrs, not 6 like todays kids. Never took the CPA exam, now 25 yrs later I’m a Financial Controller and make about 100k/yr

I can’t say I had quite as bad an average in high school, but I was in a somewhat similar boat. I had a 1560 on the old SAT’s and a 2320 on the newer one. I had to sort of show off that I was a “sometimes” genius who wasn’t focused in high school but was ready for the future, so to speak. Make sure you get an interview, and really show you’re more than the numbers seem to represent. In fact, destroy them in the essay and interview, as that really seems to be your only chance. Remember, even if you don’t make any school you really want, get straight A’s in your first year of college and transfer, saying you finally buckled down.

you’re no longer a lone, I had a terrible beginning GPA of a a million.6 because of the fact I had exterior matters occurring myself. All isn’t lost. you could the two petition to flow back to this college, or locate yet another college and be waiting to articulate what you discovered out of your in the previous journey as a freshman and don’t be afraid to observe the kin matters that have been happening additionally; all of this concepts would be private. in spite of in case you prefer to proceed on at your previous college or visit a clean college, DONT DO IT till you’re waiting to put in the time to flow to type, finished your projects, and make fulfillment your purpose. i might additionally advise having customary appointments with an academic consultant and profession counselor at your profession center to verify you’re staying on element which comprise your academic and profession targets.

3.0 isnt awful, its average. With good test scores and good extracurriculars, you shouldnt have much trouble at all in getting into a perfectly good 4 year program. And a lot of recent studies have shown that unless you are going for a few specific majors, that an Ive League education isnt worth it anyway 🙂
