What steps do I take to become an M.D.?
Favorite Answer
1) Bachelor of Science (major/minor in science), taking Physics, Inorganic and Organic Chemistry, Biology w/Labs, Anatomy and Physiology, Math thru Calculus
->Take MCAT, apply to Med School, get interviews
2) Medical School (4 yrs)
3) Internship (1 yr)
4) Residency (2 yr)
5) Pass state board exam
6) Specialize (4-8 yrs)
You can major and minor in subjects other than science, however, you will want to study those as they will help you with the MCAT and in medical school.
Also, if you can, work in the laboratory of scientists of the med school where you plan to apply. This is a great shoe-in, and will help you with your letters of recommendation when you apply.
Best wishes.
1. Most people do NOT either go or get into med school; and many of those people do not want to be in general biology, chemistry, etc. if they dont do medical school (like myself)
2. Medical schools see sooooooo much Biology, Chem, Physics majors until they get sick. Several studies have it where majoring in something unrelated helps a hell of a lot more. Just remember to take the basics need for med school entrance and a great MCAT.
Again, remeber to take the needed prereq classes for med school and know them well. But study what you enjoy. Most med school GPAs are in the 3.6 range and above.
