What’s UC Irvine like?

I’ll probably be going there next year on a year exchange from Ireland and I was wondering if anyboby could tell me about the social, academic and general life there. Would you advise me to go there etc? Thanks for all your help.

Weather is perfect. Basically shorts and t-shirts are fine year round. Especially if you’re from Ireland (absolutely beautiful country of yours).

It’s a commuter school. What this means is that most students drive into campus, and then leave when their classes end. They live at their families’ homes which often are quite far away. As such, the campus is relatively dead. Particularly after about 5pm. Yes, some kids are on campus, but it’s definitely not the typical “college” town experience. Apartments nearby are actually physically quite far. So, you won’t see tons of college kids walking around, stopping by a wild party on the way to a pub, etc. School spirit could be much improved.

Academics are pretty good. It’s not the best school in America, but it’s top 50 easily. If you’re science or engineering, it’s going to be TOUGH.

It’s primary advantage is the weather, being very close to the beach, and being in a very wealthy part of Southern California. The nearby South Coast Plaza shopping mall is quite amazing.

It’s a nice experience. Very laid back. If you’re looking for the wild and crazy party school that you might have seen in the movies, this isn’t the school to go for it. However, it’s got good academics, is in a very nice part of town, with a very relaxing atmosphere. I’d recommend doing it.
