I’m getting nervous about my upcoming public speaking class, please advise?

It’s a summer class that starts Tuesday and lasts for about a month. I have over 80 credits so far and I’ve put this class off for so long it’s not even funny. Care to share experiences?

I was on the debate team in high school and college, and even now I get nervous talking to a group, so it’s natural to feel that way. Try practicing in front of the mirror or taping yourself. You’ll get to see what your posture looks like and what your voice sounds like to other people. Also try practicing in front of friends you highly trust or anybody who can give you supportive feedback. And if you have trouble memorizing an entire speech, don’t do it. I often find I do better when I have a set of clear notes and talking points, and winging my presentation based on that.

This is my view of public speaking expecially in a class. Yes you feel nervous and even a little scared, but hey even if you look like a fool for one thing the chances of you ever really seeing these people again slim to none. Put as much energy into your speeches as you can, most people are just as nervous if not more nervous than you. Also make sure to go second if you can volunteer to go, this is because one you get it over with and the teacher will grade you easier. You do get to watch one person go before you and then you can sit and watch all the rest of the people be nervous

Practice like crazy. I hate public speaking. My high school class had it. I did fine, but I wish I knew now what I knew then. I’m now a telemarketer(lol) as a part-time job. Believe me, the experience in just talking to people all the time over the phone really helps. No practicing a speech for 20 minutes the night before doesnt count.(that’s what I did)

Practice 3 times a day for a week before. It helps.

Practice, Practice, and Practice. The more prepared you are, the more it will show. If you know what you are talking about and practiced then you will feel more comfortable and appear more confident. Confidence goes a long way in public speaking. Make sure you focus on your audience with plenty of attention. Ask them if you have questions. Think of yourself as the expert on what you are talking about and these are people hearing about it for the first time. I like to look at it as I am trying to teach. Have been in sales for 10 years now and there are always times you feel nervous, but once you are stage you tend to focus on the task at hand.

There are two rules for public speaking – 1) be prepared and 2) have fun. Make sure you always know your point of view and opposing points of view, too. That way you’ll never be side swiped by questions and you’ll look like you really know your topic. And, you have to be able to talk as if you are sitting with your audience around a kitchen table discussing the issues. Don’t lecture! Practice, practice, practice… before you present in class. I used to present in front of my dog and kids. The more you say it you’ll find you’re refining it and it will really be yours by the time you are in front of your audience.

good luck!
