What’s the maximum number of hours I should work?

I’m a college student with 17 hours of credit this coming semester (the maximum allowed at my college). I have a 4.0 average so I care a lot about my grades. How many hours for a part time job is too many? I want to work 20 hours, but I’m afraid of not being able to handle it. Any thoughts?

My advice is to take the long view on deciding. After college you’ll work full time for 40 years. So you have lots of time to work ahead of you.

You have only 4 years of college.

So don’t make the mistake of working too much in college and missing out on the special opportunities college affords you.

Also, you will probably earn more per hour after college. E.g., you might be earning $20-50/hour in your career. In college right now how much can you earn? Say $10/hour. College loans are great deal – very low interest rates usually. So borrow money now at low interest rates and pay it back later when you’re getting paid a lot more per hour of working.

Hey, I’m a big fan of working in college, but in hindsight I think I worked too many hours (10-20 on average) and missed out on taking advantage of extra curricular activities at college. So now I would work 5-10 and take some loans out.

Ally…
17 hours is alot, I am taking 15 this up commin semester, and I am chosing not to work until a few weeks in. I think you might want to see how much time you will need to devote to your classes before you take a job. However if you need one, then I would start at 15 a week and work up if you can handel it.
