The ACT is an achievement test, which means that you have to have been taught the material in order to pass the test. The SAT is mostly an aptitude test (not counting the new writing section), which is based on reasoning. This is why it is also used to test middle school students to screen for gifted programs.

Beyond those differences, the tests got their start in different regions of the U.S. Colleges on the two coasts initially insisted on applicants taking the SAT, while those in the Midwest wanted the ACT. Now I think it’s hard to find a college that won’t accept either one.

They are simply different tests.

The SAT is historically primarily a basic math (algebra and geometry level) and verbal test, although it’s been augmented in more recent years.

The ACT has more of a battery of subjects like natural science but is also highly dependent on reading comprehension skills.

All colleges pretty much require the SAT. Not all require the ACT.

SAT involves basic math, reading, writing questions while the ACT is based more on subjects.
