Liberal Arts grad…Accounting major?

Can a college grad with a Liberal Arts degree go back to undergrad to major in Accounting?

When I went to college I didn’t know what to do. Now, I have a great opportunity to take over a family accounting firm, but I obviously need to have a CPA and accounting degree. I was also questioning if I could go for an MBA with a concentration in accounting without holding an accounting undergrad. Thanks for the help!!

Absolutely you can get a new major in Accounting. You’ll have to take a bunch of extra courses that your liberal arts degree lacked in terms of the accounting requirements, but other than that you shouldn’t have any problem declaring your new major as Accounting. (Most second majors, if the new major nicely correlates with the old one, for example in my case Management after Finance, require 24 hours to get the second degree. In your case it’s probably going to be in the 40’s). The good news is that most of your basic core cirriculum classes should count towards your new major.

As far as the MBA question, my understanding is that you won’t be able to initially, simply because you haven’t taken so many of the necessary undergrad courses (both electives and upper-major classes) involved with an accounting degree. Good luck with your schooling.

well first of all to even be able to sit for the CPA exam you have to have soo many graduate courses in an MBA program! Then to be awarded it you have to work 2 full years under a CPA

So, to even apply for graduate school(MBA) you have to get an undergraduate in some business related field.

Now if you want to get your MSA (Masters of Science in Accounting) You have to have an undergrad accounting degree. and the MSA is set up for people to sit for the CPA.
