Becoming an art teacher?

I currently am en route to becoming a math teacher so this isn’t about me. My girlfriend is becoming a ec-12 art teacher and I’m worried that she won’t find a job. We live in Texas. Any opinions?

I, too, began college as an art education major only to be diverted by an advisor who said there wouldn’t be any jobs since it’s a “fringe” subject so I chose social studies and it turned out the same way!

Many people are not becoming certified in these areas for this very reason and now there are growing numbers of these jobs available. She should go for it while also considering adding an area (special education, reading, math, etc) that would make her dually attractive to schools; this nearly guarantees her a job!

She should check into the staffing at the schools in which she is interested (I don’t know if you operate on the district system or the county system). See if positions are being cut in subjects such as art or music, for example. Art teachers at the secondary level do have a more set routine, whereas elementary art teachers often have to serve several schools. Again, I don’t have knowledge of Texas, but if she needs information from high school art teachers, I might be able to get some friends to respond in a few weeks. School just opened today for students, so all teachers will need a few weeks to get their “school legs” for the year. I think the answer someone else submitted about dual certification is probably a good one to consider, if she is willing to put in the extra college time.
