What is University of Texas really like?

I am really hoping to attend UT next fall but I have been hearing that is is just a big party school. I am pre-med and am VERY focused on school. Is is just another party school or is it worth going to? How does this school compare to others in Texas? How good is it’s reputation?

I had three friends that went to UT in Austin in here’s a summary of how they felt towards the school.

One went in and graduated with a Government degree, but he told me that if he could’ve done it all over he would’ve gone elsewhere. While UT gives instant recognition to employers about their graduates, he said it came with the cost of just being another number in the mix of students. Very impersonalized was how he constantly felt, especially with the UT sports department getting all the constant recognition. UT actually has an oustanding biology and research department, but you wouldn’t know it from the all the coverage the sports teams obtains.

The other friend went there and graduated with an English degree. She too alluded to the fact that it’s easy to just get lost in the mix of the students. Even with her specialized classes in English she was still involved in 40+ student size classrooms, something she really disliked. On the plus side, she did say that having that UT stamp on her degree really helped in her pursuit of a Ph.D in English because many schools subsequently made her offers.

My third friend is currently going there to pursue a Biology degree, but she is definitely more of a party girl and because of it has thouroughly enjoyed all the “extra” incentives that come from this party school. She’s doing well in school in her grades, but I can tell she also really enjoys all the clubs, coffee shops, social groups and so on nearby.

Hope this helps. IMO, since I lived in Kyle, TX at the time (it put me smack in the middle between TxState University and UT) I easily picked TxState because it basically offered the same business degree, only a much smaller tuition rate and with a much smaller amount of students (like 22,000 less).
