What is the difference between Semester and Term?

I’m registering for fall classes and I know there is Fall semester and 2nd Fall semester, so would those two semesters together be one term? I’m going to be starting Fall semester and am signing up for classes, do i register for 2nd Fall semester at the same time if they are 1 term? Thanks.

Term is the general word which means a period of time. In education the period can be a semester or a quarter, or some other amount of time, depending on the education program. In the US most schools are on the semester system, where two semesters constitute one school year. Some colleges use the quarter system with three quarters in a school year. For those schools one term is a quarter. Semesters last anywhere from 13 to 16 weeks.

The school where you are registering will advise you. Possibly the 2nd fall semester is a different term for another academic program. For example, a school may have an undergraduate fall semester starting in September and a graduate fall semester starting in August.

Im a mature student at a British uni and when I started I was as confused as you. Basically a uni has 3 terms, similar to a school, with holiday breaks for the christmas period and easter period, which splits the terms. Unlike school there is no half terms though. The learning period over the year is split into 2, these are the semesters. In Semester 1 you learn (depending on what course you are doing and what year you are in) 4 to 8 modules of different aspects of your subject, at the end of this semester you do exams in these modules. In Semester 2 you learn 4 to 8 different modules, again relating to your subject, at the end of this again there is exams. I hope this helps. I think the semesters are because there is no way to cover all the information in just the short period of time of a term which varies in length depending on which one it is, so there is a split of 2 equal periods of time instead of 3,

semester 1. (in many educational institutions) a division constituting half of the regular academic year, lasting typically from 15 to 18 weeks.

2. (in German universities) a session, lasting about six months and including periods of recess.

term S: (n) school term, academic term, academic session, session (the time during which a school holds classes)

i think the answer is yes if its available
