What can you tell me about college?

Ok, I am going to officially be a senior in two weeks. I am so nervous. Not for my senior year, but for my freshman year at college. Everyone talks about college being so hard and I just want other people’s opinion. I do well in high school(All A’s), and I got an 1850 on the SAT and a 24 on the ACT, but I’m afraid that college will be difficult for me. So what goes on? Another question, will I be allowed to use a tape recorder in class? I know laptops are allowed but I want everything the professor says to be available to me so I don’t flunk out. Another question, if I take an AP course in a certain subject, will I have to take it in college? Let me know.

Thanks in advance,

Brittany

I”m going to be a senior in college, and take it from me, College can be stressful, but if you don’t freak out, and keep a good attitude, You’ll do GREAT!

From what you’ve posted, you’ve done great in High School. I assume you have pretty good study habits in order to keep such wonderful grades. As long as you keep that good work ethic and not slack off (too much *wink wink*), you’re going to do fine.

Taking AP tests does help out. If you take the AP exam and score 3’s or better, you might be eligible for college credit. For example, if you take an English Lit AP exam, and pass with a score of a 4, you won’t have to take an English lit class as part of your general education requirements in college. Many colleges have different requirements for credit. Some accept a 3 score for credit, others may require a 4 for credit. In either case, it’s MUCH cheaper to take an AP exam, and pass and get credit, than to pay close to 300 dollars or more for the “same” class in college. Also, another advantage is HIGH school teachers are ALWAYS more available for you to ask for help. In college, you have a professor that doesn’t really care if you understand, and office hours that may be difficult to meet. With a high school teacher, teaching an AP class, they’re a lot more willing to make sure you understand the material for the AP test.

(I was able to get 7.0 credits from AP exams)

As for laptops and tape recorders… It’s really all up to the teachers discretion. Also be sure to take the professor BEFORE you record them, because a lot of them are not comfortable with that “liability.” Laptops can be VERY helpful, but I wouldn’t say they are a total necessity. If you like typing out notes, you can do that in class.

Now, to calm your fears, You seem to be a GREAT student. Don’t worry about flunking out!! You’ve done so wonderful in high school. Keep a postive outlook on life! Always remember to get help with concepts you dont’ understand right away, because the more your procrastinate, the harder it is to catch up.

Good luck now. Keep your chin up!!

The course work in itself is not much more difficult than what you may have experienced in high school. The reading assignments and the writing assignments are longer but other than that the material is not of great difficulty as some may expect. I think the biggest problem for most students is that they don’t know how to control themselves and they sink. The professors wont hold your hand through the semester, some could care less if you pass or fail and almost wouldn’t care if you came to class or didn’t turn in an assignment. The students that have the hardest time are also then ones that don’t know how to balance their lives. You need to be mature enough to know you shouldn’t go out and get drunk every night and then skip all your morning classes because your too hung over and the professor doesn’t take attendance any anyway. College is all about self-discipline.

You will be fine. If you care about your grades and about going to class, while maintaining the balance of social activities and fun-you will be fine. It is more difficult, there is more work and responsibility, but if you want to succeed, you will.

Certain professors allow tape recorders, some do not. It depends on the professor.

If you take the AP test at the end of the year, and you get a certain score you will not have to take the class in college again. (If not, then you already have good practice for it).

Well it depends on what courses you are planning on taking and what you are majoring in. Also if you are going to a Community college first to get your feet wet. Community colleges are usually much easier than University classes. The more advanced classes yes can be difficult if you don’t spend the time studying. Yes take a taperecorder and laptop. Take any means to help you succeed in class. As long as it doesn’t disturb the class. You may want to check on the tape recorder as to what the Professor will allow, but most don’t mind. They want you to learn and succeed in their class. It always makes them look good too. I say take a lighter load your first semester. Don’t bite off more than you can chew and get discouraged. There is plenty of time. take your time, enjoym and also take a fun class in there too. Good luck with everything. You will be just fine.

relax, relax. whoever is telling you that is probably just trying to scare you. how you perform in college depends on you. i have known of people who where c and d students in highschool become a and b students in college. the degree of difficulty probably will depend on whatever your major is. i’m sure a pre-med or pre-law degree is challenging, but i’ve known some less-than-genius people have great success on the college level. the most important thing about college is probably just managing your time. if you have parents who give you enough money that you don’t have to work, well, frankly you just added a lot of time to your day. think about it: on a typical class schedule your classes are over at noon, so you literally have all day long to do whatever you wish. so, it’s up to you. what do you want to do with your time? you can sleep, play video games, waste time, or maybe you can just do your homework. honestly its as simple as doing what the teachers want you to do and be responsible for yourself. nobody is going to call you or your parents if you don’t go to class. as far as the ap courses go, it depends on the admissions at the college you are applying for, so i would ask the people at admissions. as far as the tape recorders, i never really saw anyone who actually used those things when i was in college, but depending on the class, as long as you take notes you should be fine. you sound like a smart girl, you should have absoloutly no problem in college, so please stop worrying.

good luck!

Let me tell you what I know about ‘A Students’…you WILL NOT “flunk out.” You know it and I know it.

The only reason you are here asking these questions is demonstrative of what makes you successful as a student where others struggle.

Forget about tape recorders. For your purposes, tape is dead. You may want to take a pocket voice-recorder, digital, that is (smaller than a pack of cigarettes), and probably should.

If I were you (you may wonder about my motives), I wouldn’t let it be generally known that the voice-recorder is the reason I seem to remember every word the professor says, verbatim.

Remember, your classmates will one day be your competitors. Be sure to keep your eye on your fellow ‘A students.’

Think competitive advantage.

Hello,

College is not anything like your High School years. College is an institution for Higher Learning, and the free exploration and expression of IDEAS, learned and incorporated.

Colleges are supposed to help you understand the REAL WORLD’S economic, political, and international institutions. Thus paving the way for you to make ‘informed decisions’ in every aspect of your post college years, and adulthood.

So my friend, take your time and wait until you get there, to familiarize yourself with the institution’s many departments, faculties, and fellow students.

And the sophomore year is the time to do these Preliminary things.

BringBaka.
