What is the difference between a State College, Community College, and a University??
Anyone know what the difference is between a State College, Community College, and a University?? A college that I recently applied to has changed from a state college to a university. I am guessing this is good, or is it any different?

Traditionally, a university is a collection of colleges. Kind of like saying the apple of Ohio and the orange of Ohio. If you had an apple and orange together, it would be the fruit of Ohio. So you could have a College of Nursing of Ohio or a College of Engineering of Ohio. But if you had the college of Nursing and College of Engineering together, then you would have the University of Ohio. The term community college usually refers to a junior college

A community college is as stated above, a stepping stone to bigger and better things. Students choose to do a few years at their local community college because they either want to save money, earn some more credits for university in the future, or better their basic skills so they can be better prepared for a four year university in a few years. The majority of students transfer to a university after two years or so at a CC. It’s much cheaper than a four year university since you pay by the class. Their is a campus but there are no dorms or housing or a meal plan. CC’s are great if you are in financial troubles. You can still be getting a good education while you save up money for the future.

I’m sorry this information is so late but maybe it will help others. In Florida, 2 year community colleges petitioned the state to provide 4-year bachelor’s degrees in majors that were economically-important to the areas they serve yet were not being offered by four-year public colleges and universities. I believe 11 community colleges were chartered to offer a handful of 4 years degrees the first year (maybe 2007?) and the program has expanded greatly since then. I found this while looking online to see if it has expanded to other states. It is confusing because the term state college is also used colloquially to denote public colleges and universities that receive state subsidies.

To my understanding, a Community College is a two year program, paid for by federal and state taxes, and is generally open to all applicants. A State school is a pulic college or university which offers instate tuition to residents, while charging higher tuition to students from out of state. A State school can still be selective in their admissions process, and is generally less expensive than a private college or university. A University versus a college used to mean something. Universities used to be comprised of colleges, like say a college of arts and science or college of social sciences. Today, many colleges seem to have expanded and just do not want to change their names to a University. Does anyone know more on this? Private schools are very expensive, especially Ivy Leagues, and even some small liberal arts schools. Good Luck in your schooling!!!

Community College = Community Support (taxes) 2yr degree
State College = State Support (taxes) Multiple degrees
University = Collection of Colleges (from universal)

a community college is just a 2 year institution, a state college gets funding from the state which i9s included in their budget and is a 4 year school, and a university is a 4 year private school.

a community college is a local college where you can go to do your general education. it’s cheap compared to a college.
As for the other 2, I’m not exactly sure but a state college is funded by the state i think (i hope).
