Other scholarships you earn because of academics, you have to have a certain grade point average, it just varies depending on the scholarship. Some scholarhips you earn because of athletics. If you are a basketball player, and a certain school thinks you are good, then they will pay you to go to their school as long as you play on their basketball team. The same can also go for music and things like that.
Some scholarships are given based on certain qualities you might possess. One scholarship might be awarded to someone who is a certain ethnicity, or who had ancestors from a certain country. Some are awarded based on gender, and all sorts of qualities.
Scholarhips come from different places as well. They might come from a third party, and if you win they will send you the scholarship as a check made out to your name for you to use anywhere. Scholarships can also be awarded to you from a particular school, and you could only use that money there. The time limit on scholarships varies. With mine, they gave me a check as soon as they announced it to me on senior night. The ones that come from schools will just pay your tuition automatically for you, you don’t have to worry about it.
If you know the school you want to go to, go to that schools website and check out what scholarships they offer. If you want to just search generic scholarships go to a website like www.scholarships.com and enter a little information about yourself and it will find some scholarships that would be best suited for you.
If you win a scholarship, they will probably mail it to the school, although some might mail it to you. Most send it to the school, simply because they want to make sure the money goes to and education, not a new car.
How long does it take to get to the school? Depends on the school and the people sending the scholarship.
How long does the “contest” last? It varies every scholarship. Some are 1 year, some are 4 year, it just depends.
Another way to get money for school is to get a grant. Much like a scholarship, grants don’t usually have to be paid back, but you do have to meet certain criteria to get them.
Loans, are a third way to get money for school. They can come from many sources, but must be paid back after a certain period of time. Federally secured loans usually come due X number of months after you quit attending class. They can have some of the most reasonable interest rates, so they are desirable loans to get.
The grants and loans that my son is getting while he goes to school usually arrive about the beginning of each semester. Sometimes classes have already begun before his money arrives at the school financial aid office. Because they know it’s coming, the school will give him a waiver and let him attend even though he has not yet paid his fees. As soon as the money comes in, he has to make the payment.
Since the money is sent to the school, there isn’t a way to get the money and forget to attend class.
