College application essay “What will you contribute to our school’s community?” What are they looking for

I have to write this essay for my college application and I don’t know which angle to approach it from. What on earth are they expecting me to say?

It seems they are interested to know if you will be an island onto yourself or if you will become a part of their “continent” or a part of the whole.

If you think about the fact they used the term “community”…and then look different neighborhoods in any country. The neighborhood is a community made up of individual houses and families and people. But in modern day America, how many people know their neighbors? They all live in the same community, but many are isolated and unconnected with the other members of the community. However, some other neighborhoods seem to have a high degree of interconnectivity among their members.

In times of crisis, which neighborhood do you think will be better able to handle the challenge?

So…how do you think you will first connect to the college campus community (e.g. the most obvious is enrolling, paying fees; then there are campus organizations you might join).

The critical aspect is “what you will contribute” to that community? Again, the obvious (mentioned by another responder) is the tuition and fees….but come on, that wouldn’t impress you if you were on the Admissions committee would it.

So, put aside the brutal, ugly, commercial realities, and aspire to the loftier, idealistic vision of institutions of higher learning being temples of enlightenment and the foundation for the further development of our society, culture, and even world civilization….yeah, yeah I know it sounds like idealistic optimism…but you do want to get in, right?

And when push comes to shove, the nuts and bolts of progress in the ugly world of truth, comes from people who are visionary, idealistic, and altruistic…balanced with a whole lot of practicality. And I think every college would like to lay claim to having one of these rare finds be labeled as their alumni.

So for your essay…simply put…what will you get from the college (obviously your education) and what might you give back to the college and the world (what do you aspire to do you do with it that makes the college a better place, and the world a better place).

Well, hope this helps you. Best wishes on your application.

What are they looking for? What it all boils down to is the same old stuff. money; commitment to the selected group of professionals and protection.
