It wasn’t until the end of my second year in college that I decided on a major. So don’t sweat it. Take your core required classes and get a feel for what you like, what you want to do, etc.

I definitely wouldn’t choose a major out of spite. Do what is best for your future. Who cares about that jerk? You shouldn’t. 🙂

Your first mistake (I’ve made it too) was hinging a part of your future especially career and schooling on what your boyfirend does. Life is difficult and you need to look out for yourself first. Most College freshman enter their first year unsure of what they want to do or be and those that do know usually change their mind a couple of times throughout their four years. I changed my major three times before settling with Political Science.

However, if you are unsure about college….dont go. You can always go later because if you go when you are not sure……this sets you up to fail because there is no heart involved. There are loads of good 18 month programs in allied health (X-ray tech, ultrasound sonographer) and once you are done the job market becomes your playground because they are in high demand all over the country, the pay is great 16-23 dollars an hour, and cadillac benefits.

If the pet shop is truly what you want to do and not just a bi-product of having to prove yourself to your ex then look into it. I dont think you would benefit a whole lot with an associates in business management or administration in regards to the pet shop. However, there are tons of factors that need to be considered that I have no idea about like: how big is your town/city, is it growing, projections, how many pet shops are there now, are the national chains or mom and pops, etc.)

You will make the right choice just remember to do it for you and not for the sake of a vision of the future with someone. Good luck.

There’s a lot going on here.

First, there’s your goal of opening a business. Opening any retail business–especially one that involves live animals–is costly, risky, and time consuming. Unless you’re independently wealthy, you can’t “just open a pet shop.”

As for opening a pet shop just to get back at your ex-boyfriend. . . that’s not a way to start a career. That’s a way to go broke very quickly.

You do not need to know what you want to do with your life. You’re just starting out! You can take a variety of classes in a variety of subjects to figure out what really interests you before choosing a major.

When you say “just do this” or “just do that,” it sounds like you’re settling on something you’re not quite sure you want. Right now is not the time to settle. Right now is the time to explore, to mature, and to see what the world holds for you–and what you can offer the world. Immerse yourself in college life–meet interesting people, join some clubs, etc. The answers will come to you if you’re not so eagerly seeking them out.

Good luck.

Well, that makes you like the majority of college freshmen and sophomores. Why not take the basic required courses your first year (English, whatever level of math is appropriate, etc.) and an intro to Business class and see how you like each course. That helps you decide which department’s classes you like the best, which helps you decide on a major. I wouldn’t choose a major based on what you and your ex-bf had planned just yet. Even if you guys got back together, he might decide later he doesn’t want to be a vet. If you don’t get back together, then you don’t want him controlling your life by determining your career path.

Take some time to think about what you can see yourself doing. What are your hobbies? Can you translate any of them into a career? What were your strongest or favorite classes in high school?

It is good if you can narrow it down to a field or two, if you can get that narrow, then you will have a year or so, before you will begin losing classes when you switch majors. The most important thing is to talk with your college advisor. Let them know that your major is up in the air, and let them guide you to classes that will count for many majors.

The first year is definitely a challenge. However, you don’t have to be 100% set on what you want to study. I’m about to start my 2nd year of college, and I’ll tell you I wanted to change my major numerous times. A lot of my friends have changed their majors entirely, and I’m sure a lot of them will still change majors.

It’s okay if you aren’t sure on what you want to study. Take your first year to take some core classes or even a wide range of things that interest you. See what you excel at or what you find really interesting, then decide on a major later on. A lot of schools have exploratory programs for college freshmen, you may want to check into that.

Best of luck, and remember, it’s not the end of the world if you don’t know what you want to major in. You’ll figure it out when you’re ready.

why would you care about your future plans in regards to your ex-bf? just do what you really want to do. if you wanted to open a pet shop/vet clinic before this bf, then you should go for it. listen, once you get to the univ. there will be requirements that you will have to fulfill, those requirements will help you decide whether you like something else. and if you do end up liking something else, you can always switch majors. i wanted to be a doctor, so i decided to take my pre-med classes my freshman year. a requirement was freshman composition. while in that class, i discovered i a gift for thinking, writing, and arguing. i stayed on the pre-med track and decided to take some english courses, then i realized that i really needed to stick with english. i ended up getting recognition as the most outstanding english major my senior year. and i graduated with a 4.0 in my major!

You can start with liberal arts and then decide, you can declare your major later when you are sure what you want to do.
