What education is necessary to become an actor?

Yeah yeah I know it’s not necessary, but it’s for a project so I need the info.

As an aspiring actor, you have the luxury of studying whatever you want. But remember, the only big name actors who make it big with no education usually have this:

1. Smart family/friends who make the choices for them. (Jessica Simpson, Beyonce)

2. They’ve been acting forever and had the best on the job training (Drew Barrymore, Olsens, Lindsay Lohan).

Any education will work:

1. The Terminator himself has a 4 yr degree in Economics. That is why he was more successful than the other body builder actors.

2. Your nonacting background can help you land roles.

3. Jessica Alba landed Flipper because she was an experienced swimmer while the other actresses who auditioned looked uncomfortable in the water)

4. Toby Maguire got Spider-Man because he had a martial arts background.

5. Clint Eastwood excelled in his western movies because he spent a lot of his life owning/working a ranch with horses. Can you imagine a guy from New York City, who never rode a horse, try to get a role as a cowboy?

A good one. Study something you can use if you do not make it big. Study something you like. Study something that will enlighten you to the human condition because as an actor you are always creating the human condition from the words of a writer and direction from a director. Get your degree, do not just vegatate while you are taking roles and trying to get discovered. Study what you can do with your body. Comedians really need to know this, and who is to say you will not do comedy. Study literature because you need to be able to think on your feet. And a well placed line just might be how you get that life changing role. Study science so you know how things work. You will be useful to others this way, that is a life choice. But mostly study what it takes to be loved. Then you can love back and not be too two dimentional as many celebrities are. Good luck

If you want to go to a traditional university then a bachelors degree in acting would be the way to go.

Here’s several schools that offer bachelors in acting: http://www.universities.com/On-Campus/Bachelor_degree_Visual_and_Performing_Arts_Acting.html

On the job training is still better though. If you can get into some Broadway rolls that will add lots to your resume and experience level.
