The boy’s and girl’s name Phoenix \pho(e)-nix\ is of Greek origin, and its meaning is “dark red”. The mythical Arabian bird known as the phoenix is a symbol of immortality. After living for centuries, it dies, and rises from its own ashes. Also the name of a city in the southwestern US state of Arizona. Actors Leaf, Joaquin, and the late River Phoenix.

The explanation of “Rise from the ashes” above is a good one. My son is attending Elon University – and the mascot is a Phoenix. They chose that after the school burned to the ground in the early 1920’s and they rose like a “phoenix from the ashes” to rebuild the school.
