In this paragraph, ‘wild abandonment’ suggest that when she cried, she let it all go. All her grief and emotion poured out and she didn’t try to restrain it.

She wasn’t paralyzed and she wasn’t unable to accept the story’s significance. She did accept it, and was overcome with grief by its truth, so overcome that she sobbed, knowing that the terrible news she had just heard was actually true. She abandoned self control in this storm of grief.

She allowed herself to give in completely to the emotion. Believe it or not, to give in to those kinds of emotion is a healthy thing to do as it releases all the pent up feelings from a situation and allows one to look at the situation from a fresh perspective.

She INSTANTLY understood the depths of pain invoked by the story and LOST IT — completely gave over to the depths of emotion she experienced through her knowledge.
