What college major?

Hi,

I am about to apply for college and I have my choice of major narrowed to communications and english double major (to be a journalist), architecture, or computer science. I know that people can’t choose for me but, call me senicle, I am wanting to have a job which makes a difference. I don’t want to wake up some day in my late forties manically depressed and feeling like what I have done with my life makes no difference. Any suggestions?

You absolutely do not need to make this decision now, and it’s perfectly fine to start college as an ‘undecided’ major. This option gives you the choice to explore some courses in each of these areas you’ve listed here. Communication and English are very different from architecture and computer science! You’ll want to be able to use some of your elective courses to figure out which of these areas best suits you. I can promise that you will make a difference in any of these industries, because it’s all about you and the passion you have for your job. If you don’t choose something that you enjoy, you might find yourself with a career that you’re not happy with. The best thing about college is that you have a 4-year opportunity to explore what you want to ‘be when you grow up’. Take that time, talk with advisors in your career center and do what’s best for you!

Hi Chang!

It’s good that you were able to identify your top 3 interests!

So, as a journalist you would be able to report stories and/or write articles that would inform and influence others. That’s a job where you can make a difference.

As an architect you and design buildings, homes, etc. and these buildings would be used for various things, like agencies for the homeless, medical facilities, offices, homes for families. You have benefitted society in a positive way with your architectural contribution, thus a difference in our world.

And last but not least, in computer science, you might design a program or device that tracks criminals or a new way to communicate, or you might just set up communication networks that benefit other countries in places where computers are less accessible. So, you have made a difference.

In each of these positions you have worked with others, mentored some co-workers, encouraged someone’s creativity. You have also made money and donated to a charitable organization, you have made a difference.

As you can see, you will make a difference no matter what career you pursue, you know why? because you want to! You have the heart, interest, compassion to make sure your life isn’t lived selfishly but for the betterment of society in general.

You are already making a difference because you have given me hope that the next generation will be socially conscious and responsible. Keep it up!

Decide what will make you happiest, and go for it!

You can make a difference in any job. Even if you just do something where you make a lot of money doing something where you have little contact with people, you can give that money to charities of your choice. And even if you are a cog in the machine, and don’t make enough money to make a difference that way, if your job puts food on the table for your family, it still makes a difference. Do something you like. If you like all those things equally, do computer science, because there’s the most demand for that in the workplace, which means you’ll likely have more choice about what kind of industry to end up in.

for one thing dont pick your major now you’re bound to change it and i wouldnt suggest journalism b/c its highly competitive and really hard (you dont wanna end up working for some local newspaper for the rest of your life) but “making a difference” is all relative b/c when you grow you’ll realize that supporting your family and being happy not making a difference in the world (althoght it is important but not essential)
