It depends on the school you are attending. Start applying for schools if you haven’t already, and if you have been admitted, check out the websites of the schools. Every school has different requirements. But to get an idea of the classes you might take:

Drilling Practices and Well Completions

Petroleum Production Laboratory

Properties of Hydrocarbon Fluids

Well Logging

Petroleum Reservoir Engineering

Petroleum Engineering Design

Petroleum Valuation and Economics

Fundamental Digital Applications in Petroleum Engineering

Offshore Petroleum Technology

Environmental Petroleum Applications

Advanced Drilling Technology

Well Test Analysis

Natural Gas Engineering

What classes does your university offer?

Noting that engineering is not so scattered in curriculum as many liberal arts majors (Smitter: it’s possible for two students to graduate with degrees in communication from different colleges and have no two courses in common). But even so, each university will have different requirements in the major (as well as in gen.ed. and in the potential electives).

If you haven’t enrolled in a university yet–or if you’re just starting out and transfer is an option–you might want to do a little research/asking around to find out which universities have the best programs for petro. eng.

I’m fairly confident that you’ll want a good deal of chemistry and probably a basic geology course. But in the end, your academic advisor and career development office on your campus will answer you in a way that matches you and your institution–much better than any answers you’re likely to get here.
