What can I do with a psychology degree and how long does it take to get one?

What kind of schooling does it take? Does it require med school or just a college degree in it?

A psychologist (academic doctoral degree)and a psychiatrist (medical doctor) are not the same. So if you get a degree in psychology you won’t be a medical doctor.

This depends on the country you are in and state laws. You can work in many health rolls, sales, advertising, personnel and media positions with a psychology degree. To work as a psychologist in hospitals you need to do a 3 year degree, a 1 year honours research program and another year as an intern at a training hospital. You can only get degrees from a university but you can do psychology degrees through Arts not only health faculties. Art faculties also teach history, politics, philosophy and many other subjects. Painting and that type of arts comes under Creative Arts. Colleges often teach area specific psychology with other course, you may learn Business Psychology in a Business course or you may be able to do counselling if state laws allow it. Always check state law before enrolling in expensive psychology courses to make sure the course will qualify you to do what you want to do.

A degree in psychology takes four years. It does not take medical school to become a licensed psychologist, but you if you want to practice clinical psychology or be a therapist, you will at least have to get your master’s degree, which will take another two years. Preferably, you should go on to get your PhD after that, and that takes around four more years.

If you just get an undergraduate degree, your career choices are more limited. You can work for a mental health facility or a human resources department, but you will not make as much money as you would if you pursued your education a bit longer.

Psychology is like getting an English degree…in terms of going for a Masters or Phd. You could teach with a bachelors. I work in a mental hospital (no psychology degree) and I make $12/hr (but I’ve been there for almost 5 yrs) You can either start off in a community college or straight to a four yr university. A counselor would be able to guide you further. Best of luck!

In the UK a Psychology PhD takes 3 years of full time study. To complete a PhD you need to already have at least a BA or BSc Psychology honours degree which takes 3 years of full time study in England and 4 years in Scotland. Whilst it is not a must-have, you have a better chance of getting accepted for a psychology PhD if you have completed a postgraduate Masters degree after your BA/BSc, which takes a further 1 year of full time study. I’d recommend an MSc in Psychological Research Methods or an MRes degree, which is a masters of research degree, as good Masters to do before a PhD. Overall, you are looking at at least 6 years of full time study and possibly up to 8 years to go from an undergraduate degree to finishing a PhD. Hope this helps!

a psychiatrist goes to med school after getting a 4 year degree. This is because psychatrists prescribe medication. Psychologists are not medical doctors, and thus don’t prescribe. In order to truly be called a psychologist (and not a counselor or social worker) you have to complete 4 years of a bachelor’s degree and 2-4 years of graduate school (masters/doctoral). I am a school psychologist who went through 4 years undergraduate, 1 year master’s degree, and 4 years doctoral training. I never finished my dissertation, and am considered to be ‘All But Dissertation’. I am still able to call myself a psychologist, however.

There are many different types of psychology- check out the link below to see 53 types. There are some psychologists who work with lab rats all day (Joyce Brothers). There are some who work in prisons, and some who work in businesses (Industrial/Organizational). Others work in hospitals with people who’ve had traumatic brain injuries. And some who work in Schools like me and deal with all of the above (ok, maybe not the lab rats…it depends on the school and how old it is)

One mistake is that people think it’s an easy discipline in college. An undergrad degree in Psychology means you learn a little bit about each of the areas, and then go to graduate school to specialize.
