What can I do with a degree in International Development Studies or International Studies?

I’m a highschool student and I’m divided on which of the two (International Development Studies or International Studies) I’ll be choosing for my major.

What are my career options after completing one of these?

As someone who works in the collegiate setting in academic advisement, I can recommend International Studies to you and here’s why:

International Studies is very broad and can be applied to numerous employment opportunities ranging from accounting, to banking, to consulting, to politics, etc., etc. International Development Studies, while a worthwhile area of study, is typically reserved for certain specific facets of the options I just listed above. In other words, with Int’l Studies, you can narrow your focus.

Career options for Int’l Studies include a broker, translator (depending on the foreign language you study or minor in), travel agent, political representative, financial officer, geographic analyst, climatologist. It’s so very broad, that’s why I recommend it. You can tweak it to the interests you personally have.

I hope this helps! Good luck.

That’s something you need to ask at that department, in person. That’s not a professional degree and does not lead directly to licensure in anything. Honestly, it sounds like a waste of time to me. Majoring in two subjects is no better than majoring in one. People say it is, but I have yet to see any proof of it being better.
