What are the advantages to a private college as opposed to a a public one?
Favorite Answer
on a higher note, the class sizes are smaller but unless you are someone that needs additional help or instruction, i wouldn’t recommend it.
1) Private colleges with a religious affiliation (not all do) typically have a much greater emphasis on faith and religion embedded in the school’s mission. Every school carries this out to different extremes.
2) Private colleges will not have as many alums (because usually they are smaller), but will often have a more connected alumni. This can help students get internships, jobs, etc. Public colleges alums often have a greater infatuation with athletics.
3) Smaller private colleges tend to care more about you as a student (and I hate to use the word – customer) and person, and you will be able to develop more solid relationships with faculty and staff mentors.
4) Smaller private colleges still have a party scence, but it is typically not to the extent as depicted on TV shows or on large public college campuses.
I am biased, but truly believe in the education and experience at small, private colleges. But they are not for everyone and I know students who leave because they want more of a party scene.
Good luck
