In your case, I think you have only a vague idea. Just guessing–you got into college and majored in business either because somebody else thought it was a good idea, you heard it was a good idea, or you liked some of the professors. Am I right?

What you need is career counseling. If you can get back to your old alma mater, their career development office might do it for you; otherwise try a nearby community college, where they’re liable to help you as a community-service sort of thing.

Proper career counseling will identify specific lines of work that you will find truly rewarding, not just financially. Then they can help you identify the specific skills that will lead to that career. Maybe you will need to go on and earn a grad. degree–maybe you’re really cut out to be a pharmacist (starting pay $60K) and you’ll need to go back for a different bachelors.

Only when you have a tightly defined goal will you be able to target it properly. “Business” is too broad, there’s all kinds of business–HR, financial, retail, marketing, manufacturing, entrepreneurship. Our universities provide horribly poor service to students by not helping them clarify their career focus, instead giving them the impression that finishing the major is important and that a career will automatically follow.

You will gain experience and the all important references.
