Actually, I have a friend in the FBI and he said that since the primary job of the FBI is to investigate white collar crimes, the number one preferred degree is accounting. The agency you want is the CIA. They deal with human intelligence (HUMINT) and understanding people (sociology) is a big part of that.

Although the CIA is not considered a law enforcement agency, they do have Police Officers that work within the Security Protective Service. A couple of other job titles that might interest you are Inspector General – Special Agent/Investigator and Protective Agent. You should choose a major that interests you and that is marketable. If you want to become an FBI Special Agent, I would consider choosing accounting, computer science, a foreign language that the FBI considers critical, or law as your major. However, any degrees that develop research and analytical skills are desirable educational backgrounds for FBI Special Agent candidates. Whatever major you choose, make the most of your time and money. Choose a college or university that is properly accredited, get the highest grade point average that you can, participate in a couple extracurricular activities, get a good internship, do some regular volunteer work, don’t do anything illegal, and maintain a good reputation. Consider getting an advanced degree. Getting law enforcement officer jobs is becoming more and more competitive. Do whatever you can to make yourself the best candidate that you can. Many federal agencies have criminal investigators or special agents. Consider the CIA, the FBI, and other agencies too.

It is extremely hard to get into the FBI. Although they do like “soft sciences” such as sociology and psychology, they rarely, accept people into the program who do not have masters or doctorate degrees. The top professions are: Attorneys & Linguists. go to their web page & fill out an application, if they are interested in you they will send you a non despript letter inviting you to take their phase one exam.

If you pass phase one you are invited back for phase 2 interviews, then physical, more interviews & then it is on to Quanico. One thing you should know, relocation is a must. FBI now requires new agents to work in small “field” offices for the 1st 5 years.

Good Luck

I would imagine that a sociology degree would help. I’ve taken several sociology courses at my University, and they seem like they would be perfect. They help you understand why certain groups do certain things, and enable you to view things from a broader perspective.
