Good question, first of all, check out the student Engineering and non-engineering groups on campus. I volunteered for our Engineering magazine as a proofreader and got to meet professional and student writers as well as get writing (i.e. non-engineering) experience that helped broaden my resume.

Most student groups don’t limit members by major, race or religion, some do, but most welcome all members, so look at your interests, not just your major – what do you like?

Given that, you’ll see that many student groups volunteer in the communities for things like Habitat for Humanity, health issues, and things like that.

Not sure what kind of Engineer you are – Civil, Mechanical, Chemical – but your resume will look best with things you like to do – look at how many companies like Chevron or Microsoft encourage employees to participate in events like Race for the Cure, literacy programs – they want well-rounded people who can work with other people in situations that may or may not involve Engineering but involve you as a person.

And IMHO if you can find something interesting that you like that is pretty rare, it’s just a great conversation starter in an interview – I dabble in archery, so many times that has come up in interviews and led to discussions about concentration, accuracy, and Robin Hood!

Good luck!

p.s. your department should have some kind of Alumni network where you can meet with past graduates and talk about their jobs and experience – it’s not a job interview, just an information session. Most alums would be happy to give advice and review a resume (remember you’re not job hunting with the alum, just chatting with them!) – just offer to pay for lunch!

I am going to school to be an elementary school teacher at a University, and I just had to do a resume last week. I just put my work experience, and basic information, becasue I didnt have any previous experience either when it comes to teaching. I got an A on it. If you have a while to do the resume, I would contact some engineering businesses, firms, ect. and see if you could do some observations, or volunteer work. I dont see why they wouldnt let you. hope that helped a little

Volunteer for some groups that work on improving your town.

Maybe you could work with a boys club teaching some simple things that involves engineering.

Try to do something that involves engineering so you can add that to the resume.

You did not say what type of engineering you will have when you get your degree. I might have been better at suggestions. If it is in computers the maybe you could teach how to use a computer at the senior center.
