Wanting to go to the private college in town…?

I am a stay at home mom who wants to go to college, I have actually always wanted to but life keeps making it rather difficult (even before having a baby). I want to go to a college in my town…but not the community one. I REALLY want to attend the private college Hendrix, it has a great arts and writing program, along with other things I am greatly interested in. Money is a bit tight but we do have some extra, and finding someone/s to watch my baby is easy, the hard part is getting in. I need to take my ACT and SAT, how should I prep for those? Also, my GPA was awful. They said they will take circumstances into account (my mom was in and out of the hospital the whole time I was in highschool) and recomended I take one class at the community college…how would you recomend going about that? Also, scholorships would only cover four years, so how can I take as many classes as possible and still take care of my family? Any help/advice would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

I’m a divorced mom just finishing my degree at the private college in my town!

However, I got here by way of the community college. I finished an associate’s degree there, and took the SAT afterwards. My GPA from the CC and SAT scores were then high enough to get me into the private college.

As far as finding time, most schools won’t give you much in the way of scholarships unless you’re a full time student, anyway. Are your children in school? I’ve managed to schedule most of my classes during the school day, and my mother babysits my youngest. It’s tough, but most of the work you’ll be doing is outside of class anyway – so you’ll be home with your kids, trying to work amid all the distractions.

It can be done, though; I’m graduating next May.

Good luck!

The school doesn’t matter, as long as you get your degree your set! However, make sure this private college has an accrediated program from the College of Dental hygenists. Dental hygiene is a very competitive program in Ontario I know, so it might be a benefit trying to get into a private college. Also, with the private college you can expect tutiton fee’s to be a lot more expensive, however you will save money by living at home!

I think, based on everything you said, you should go ahead and apply to Hendrix. You could well get in, and if you do not, then take their advice and do a certain number of classes at your local cc, and then reapply to Hendrix. You lose nothing by going ahead and applying to Hendrix now – worst case, you simply go to the cc and reapply, best case you could get in!

If you have childcare for during your classes, and if you have time to study (maybe while baby is sleeping), then you are golden. Literally, that’s usually the hardest part for a working parent to handle. If you know you have childcare, get excited, because this could work.

The easiest way to prep for the SAT/ACT is to take a prep class. (And… shh… know that some people find the ACT exam a bit easier than the SAT, so…). These are available via Kaplan, Princeton Review, other companies, and also via most university’s continuing education classes (and that option is often cheaper). You can also get books from the library or a bookstore that can help you prep. At a minimum, right now, go ahead and get a book or order online a full sample SAT exam. Take it, timed, in silence, as you would take the exam in real life. See how you score, then judge what sort of prep you need.

You can literally take just one class at the cc, if you want. You do it via continuing education. The class will count toward your transfer to Hendrix, if it’s one of the basic, intro classes that every freshman needs to take, such as English, Math, etc. It doesn’t have to be (and perhaps shouldn’t be) in your major. Just keep it to the general educational requirements that every student needs to fulfill. Do your major classes once you get to Hendrix. CC classes are also rather inexpensive, relatively speaking, so you may not need a loan for that.

Most students fund their education via a combination of student loans and, when they can get them, scholarships and grants, plus personal funds. Fill out the FAFSA – that’s the main form you use to find out what aid you qualify for. Also, talk to the school about scholarships, as well as to your church and any civic organisations to which you belong.

See if any of your classes are offered on line or take night classes. I was a single mom for eight years and I had my mom watch my son, during the day if I had a class my job would let me go for the classes then come back to work after class. I went to a private university that was 5 blocks from where I worked. Also I took night classes which usually only meet for one night a week for a couple of hours or I did the online class. It was hard I understand your circumstances, I had filed for a pell grant which gave me more money for school because I was a single working mother. It paid off all that struggling. Good Luck

I was looking up schools also…There is a site called collegeboard.com where you can get all the information on schools in your area…and the schools website. Student loans really suck but you might be surprised by the financial aid you get…especially if you have children. As much as the idea of community college isnt too fun it’s probably your best bet because then you can go to your choice school afterwards as a transfer with a better gpa. I dont know about the school in your area but I was happily suprised by the community college in my town. Try it out…It will really help your gpa

If your baby is below 6 years, it’s better to accompany him/her than go to college. because at this period you can create the “love-chain” (i don’t know what’s the proper word for this) between you and your son/daughter.

You can always go to college later, and college is not the only place to learn things.

Hopefully you get the picture 🙂
