What subject? Admissions in British universities is done by the department, not by the university. Also if you have not done at least 3 AP tests, most English universities will require that you do what’s called a foundation year – a one year set of courses to get you prepared for the standard degree program. If you do well, you will get transferred onto the bachelor’s degree program. Scottish universities will take you straight into the bachelor’s degree. The flip side is that English bachelor’s degrees are three years, while Scottish ones are four years.

You should probably look at the Times and Guardian league tables online for your subject of interest and see which universities have the optimal combination of quality and admissions standards. Then, email the admissions tutors at some of these places to see how they evaluate American applicants.

In general, it should be easier, not harder, for an American to be admitted to a British university than it is for a British student of similar qualifications. American students pay international fees, so the British universities are eager to get as many as they can without really sacrificing standards.
