Undeclared Liberal Arts?

I’m being forced to choose a major! I’ve decided on Liberal Arts, but I don’t know what I specifically want to study. I’m interested in Anthropology, Sociology, English, and Philosophy and I plan on touching on some others while in school. Why do people choose ‘undeclared’ liberal arts? Is that for those like me who have decided on liberal arts but not on specific studies? Should I choose that? What are the pros and cons of doing so?

Thanks to whomever can help me out here.

From things you listed you might want to go into counseling or psychology. Counseling does not require as much and people get out of the program pretty easy. Having the love for Anthropology, Sociology, and Philosophy will help in that area.

The “undeclared” Liberal Arts box on your application is for people just like you who haven’t picked a major yet but have at least narrowed it down to Liberal Arts (as opposed to science, engineering, business, architecture, etc.). It’s not a major. Some colleges do offer a general liberal arts major, but “undeclared” means undecided.

You choosing that vs. something more specific on your application probably won’t help or hurt your chances of getting in, nor does it commit you to anything. It’s just so that they can compare you to other students applying in the same field. For example, a C in Calculus wouldn’t hurt you as a liberal arts major, but it would if you were applying as a math major.

You don’t have to choose a major until late sophomore/early junior year. Take classes in all your interests your first year (and of course core credits you need) and decide from there.

Who is “forcing” you to choose a major? Is the college? Because most colleges don’t require you to declare your major until your junior year. You can always switch your major once you’ve declared it.
