The Ivies or a Good Public School?

Ok my parents have both attended Ivy schools but th ething is even though I have a very high GPA and great stats etc.. I actually dont want to go to any of the Ivies. I know it sounds crazy but I just think a great, diverse, liberal public school like say UC-Berkley would suit me better. Anyways are the Ivies that much different to say a prestigous public school like Berkley or Michigan (Ann Arbor)?

It totally depends on the field of study you want to pursue. For example, Berkeley’s civil engineering program is recognized across the board as being one of the best in the world. In comparison, no civil engineering program from any of the ivy league schools even comes close to Berkeley’s reputation.

Whatever your field of study, this is what I would recommend: pick some of the public and private schools that you think might have a good program in what you want to do and go to their websites. Look at the professors’ webpages on the department website of your field of interest and note where they got their college degrees from. After doing this for several schools, you may begin to see a pattern emerge. You may notice that several of the professors got their degrees from Wisconsin or Nebraska or wherever. This means that those schools probably have the most prestigious programs in your field of interest.

Also, ask around which schools have the best programs. Call some of the local professionals in your career of interest, and ask them for advice on where to got to school and how to best prepare yourself to be an attractive employee out of college. You may find that by doing so, you not only get some great advice, but you might also land yourself an internship or a future full-time job!

My candid response: neither! The large public schools and the ivies educate undergrad in remarkably similar ways: large lecture halls (despite what they may tell you), teaching assistants, etc. If you are a talented student, want a diverse experience, and want a strong learning community amongst all students, you should look at some of the select liberal arts colleges. The quality of education is simply much higher and students leave much more prepared to do many more things in the world. I would suggest www.icwashington.org, www.ctcl.com, www.lutherancolleges.org, http://www.mnprivatecolleges.org/.

I would be more inclined to go with Michigan or such —

the ivies may/may not have more prestige, but to me

they carry the stigma of “big money snobbery” and not

necessarily the best education value.

technically they could desire to flow on grades and reviews, A public college won’t have the opportunities given at deepest. yet then you certainly could desire to discover the opportunities fairly than look ahead to then to slap you on your face. and that’s going to additionally be judged on golf equipment/activities issues like that. i flow to a grammar college in england so have not have been given any thought the way it works interior the US yet might think of it works extra or less the comparable as right here so deepest and better end public faculties provide you extra advantageous training consequences…
